Application of Plant Growth Regulators on Tall Fescue

Tall fescue is a perennial cool-season turfgrass of the genus Fescue in the Poaceae family. Tall fescue is a clumping type with broad leaves, dark green color, long green period, strong division ability, developed root system, strong adaptability, and is one of the most drought-resistant and trample-resistant cool-season turfgrasses. It can be used to build a variety of lawn green spaces, and can be used in the greening of parks, institutions, and residences, as well as high-quality sports fields.

Application of plant growth regulators on tall fescue:

  1. Promote seed germination

Soaking tall fescue seeds in 100~200mg/L gibberellic acid ga3 solution for 48h, or soaking seeds in 100mg/L gibberellic acid ga3 for 24h can promote seed germination and seedling growth, and significantly increase the germination rate. In addition, soaking tall fescue seeds in 0.5mmol/L salicylic acid or 300mg gibberellic acid ga3 solution for 8h can also promote its seed germination.

  1. Promote growth and early greening

Spraying the tall fescue lawn with 100mmol/L NAA solution can significantly promote root development and increase the score. In addition, in the early stage of tall fescue greening, spraying the plants with 30~50mg/L gibberellic acid ga3 solution and appropriate amount of Compound Fertilizer (22:8:15) on the leaves can significantly accelerate the growth of lawn grass and promote the early greening of the lawn.

  1. Regulate growth and reduce manual pruning

The fast growth and high pruning frequency of tall fescue are troubling problems in production. Spraying the plants with 200~400mg/L Uniconazole solution on the leaves 5~7 days before mowing the tall fescue can significantly inhibit growth, and the leaves are dark green. Usually, the effect of the drug is maintained for about 3 months after one spray. Applying 600mg Paclobutrazol solution to tall fescue can also strongly inhibit growth, shorten and thicken the leaves, shorten the internodes, and reduce the number of lawn mowing. In addition, spraying tall fescue plants with 600~1000mg/L Chlormequat Chloride solution can reduce its growth rate, shorten its root system, and increase the number of individual plants.

  1. Improve stress resistance

Soaking tall fescue seeds in 0.5mmol/L salicylic acid solution for 24 hours can significantly enhance the drought resistance of tall fescue seeds during the germination stage. In addition, spraying tall fescue plants with 200mgL Paclobutrazol solution can enhance the vitality of the root system, enhance the heat resistance of the plants, delay the aging of the plants, and obtain better summer survival ability. Spraying tall fescue with 20mgL S-ABA can significantly improve the early resistance of the lawn. Furthermore, under low temperature stress in winter, spraying tall fescue with 15mg/L S-ABA solution on the leaves, spraying once every 15 days, for a total of 3 times, can improve the growth and cold resistance of the plants.
